Airlines crack down on ‘big bags’

US airlines are cracking down on luggage size and penalising customers who go over the limit.

The airlines have a long-standing rule that establishes 62 linear inches – height plus length plus depth – as the maximum size of a piece of luggage they will accept without penalty.

The rule has largely been ignored, but from early September, airlines have stated their intention to enforce the rule, according to the US Travel Goods Association.
The penalties for breaking the rule vary between airlines, but can be steep. The association said some airlines charge as much as $270 for oversized bags.

US customers have been warned to check with the airline about its specific baggage rules before packing for their trip.
