Alcatraz prison to be peace center?
Voters in San Francisco are deciding whether to scrap the famous Alcatraz prison to build an international peace center.
Voters will decide whether the city should acquire the famous prison from its owners, the federal government.
This is, of course, the city that spread the word of ?peace and love? during earlier and hipper times.
The proposal calls for a peace center and spiritual healing space in a prison that once housed Al Capone.
“Do we want an old decaying prison to continue to be a significant landmark for the city of San Francisco or do we want to create something new that’s a reflection of a new emerging paradigm of more progressive ideas and values?” Da Vid, the measure?s chief backer, told wire services.
Others, however, see the idea as wacky, and a reinforcement of the bayside city’s reputation as a haven for iconoclasts and oddballs.
