American wins lawsuit against Sabre

American Airlines has won its long-running antitrust lawsuit against Sabre Corp after a jury awarded damages of $5.1 million to the airline.

The ruling relates to a lawsuit filed by US Airways, now part of American Airlines, alleging anti-competitive practices.

US Airways had alleged Sabre forced the airline into a contract with ‘numerous oppressive and anticompetitive terms designed by Sabre to harm competition and entrench Sabre’s dominance’.

However the jury found no conclusive proof Sabre colluded with Amadeus and Travelport.

The airline was seeking more than $40 million in damages.

"We are very pleased with the jury’s decision and greatly appreciate the time and effort they expended during the course of this eight-week trial," American said in a statement.

"We have long contended that the contractual provisions at issue – provisions that Sabre has made a condition to participate in its global distribution system – have reinforced Sabre’s market power, stymied competition, and harmed us and the travelers we serve,"

Sabre said it will consider an appeal but will continue working with the airline.

"The jury sorted through a complicated case that involved hypothetical economic theories, intricate technology discussions, and months of testimony. We continue to believe we operated fairly and lawfully in an extremely competitive marketplace," it said in a statement.
