Amtrak needs ‘complete overhaul’

Saturday, 28 Nov, 2005 0

The US’s Amtrak train system needs a complete overhaul of the corporation, including its business model and strategies.

So says US Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta.

“Our passenger rail system today is an antique,” he said.

Amtrak had 7% more losses in the past two years than in previous years. Losses for the under-funded railroad are expected to continue.

Mr Mineta said the Bush administration wants to keep Amtrak running.

He also said the US system could never emulate European-style rail service because the US is different.

“Rail cannot compete with air service because our country is too large and our cities too distant,” he said.

He made his remarks during a meeting of the Association for a Better New York.
