APD reformers to step up pressure on ministers
Anti air tax campaigners have seen another opportunity to put pressure on the Government to review the impact of the unpopular charge following the expansion of Labour front bencher Lilian Greenwood’s brief to include aviation.
A Fair Tax on Flying said the move presented an ideal opportunity for the Opposition to put pressure on the Government between now and the next election to review Air Passenger Duty.
Simon Buck, chief executive of the British Air Transport Association added: "It is timely to re-focus the debate on the damage caused by Air Passenger Duty and expose the flaws in the Government’s current approach.
"The Government plans year-on-year rises in APD despite the growing body of evidence that suggests that reduction or abolition could deliver significant economic benefits.
"We look forward to working closely with Ms Greenwood to ensure that the Opposition is fully apprised of all the facts about APD and supports calls from over 100 MPs for a Treasury review of APD – something for which our campaign has long been calling."
