ASTA considers suing CDC over No Sail order

Monday, 05 Oct, 2020 0

The American Society of Travel Advisors is mulling the option of legal action against the federal government over the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s prolonged ‘No Sail’ order.

The CDC again extended the cruise ship ban until the end of October.

ASTA is pursuing the option of filing a lawsuit, although it acknowledges there is little chance of success.

It unfairly targets the cruise industry, ASTA says, as hotels and airlines are able to operate despite various restrictions.

"People have made adjustments to manage health risks," ASTA CEO Zane Kerby said at a media briefing.

"The CDC is saying there’s no precautions that can be taken to safely return people to the seas, when literally every other activity has been left to find that balance."

However, it could have been potentially worse.

A news reports by Axios says CDC Director Robert Redfield was overruled by White House officials when he tried to extend the ban into next year.

A meeting of cruise executives and White House officials was canceled Friday due to President Trump testing positive for Covid-19.
