Australia to continue quarantine for overseas visitors even after vaccination

Sunday, 08 Feb, 2021 0

Australia plans to continue imposing mandatory quarantine for arriving travellers even after mass vaccinations are rolled out in Australia and elsewhere around the world.

It would still apply to vaccinated visitors, probably until a majority of Australians are immunised.

There is still uncertainty over transmission of Covid-19 after a person has been given the jab.

Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said the data is still inconclusive.

"At the moment, the two-week quarantine in hotels – which has been so successful up till now – remains regardless of vaccination," Kelly said.

Australia expects to start vaccinating citizens later this month.

Government Services Minister Stuart Robert said all vaccinated citizens will be entered on the Australian Immunisation Register database and proof of the jab can be accessed via smartphone to ease processes such as interstate and international travel.

Robert said the government is discussing it with other countries to make it compliant for cross-border processing to enable two-way international travel to resume in the coming months.
