Avalon Airport set for growth
Avalon Airport is set for change with proposal for a bargain shopping outlet due to be put before the Government. The Linfox-owned airport’s general manager, Tim Anderson, yesterday said the airport’s long-term viability hinged on such a development.
A retail factory outlet, based on Essendon Airport’s recently-opened Direct Factory Outlet, would provide jobs for about 600 people.
Mr Anderson, who also manages Essendon Airport, said management was “seriously contemplating” a similar concept at Avalon. He said it had all the necessary requirements, including space and tourists.
“The reality is, and it’s been proven right around the world, that airports cannot survive just by landing planes,” Mr Anderson said.
“We are very mindful that to sustain the economic benefits of Jetstar, we need to compliment it with another economic generator.”
He said Essendon DFO had attracted busloads of shoppers from as far as Apollo Bay, which would more likely shop at Avalon if they had the choice.
“That’s why we have turned our mind to the possibility of one at Avalon,” Mr Anderson said.
The project would need Federal Government approval, as Avalon Airport sits on Crown land.
