Avianca Brasil exits Star Alliance
Avianca Brasil will officially leave Star Alliance on September 1, 2019.
It follows bankruptcy proceedings since last year which led to it losing its air operator’s license in Brazil.
It also had some of its jets repossessed.
The airline which is now known as Ocean Air Linhas Aéreas S/A and headquartered in São Paulo, first joined the global alliance three years ago.
"I wish to stress that the exit of Avianca Brasil in no way affects the membership of Avianca S.A., our valued member based in Bogota, Colombia, which continues to be a significant contributor to the Alliance in South America."
Avianca Brasil’s demise leaves a gap in the alliance for Brazilian domestic and regional coverage although there are still 11 Star Alliance members operating services to Brazil, including United Airlines, Air Canada, Avianca, Air China, Copa Airlines, and South African Airways.
"Avianca Brasil made important contributions to our customer proposition in the Brazilian market and we regret this unfortunate development," Goh said.
From September the alliance will number 27 member airlines.
