BA accused of industrial vandalism over Concorde plans
Virgin increases its offer to GBP1 million per jet, with no success
Virgin Atlantic has once again raised the stakes in the long-running Concorde saga, offering British Airways GBP1 million for each of its five supersonic jets.
The Guardian reports that Virgin is accusing BA of “industrial sabotage” for its plans to ground the Concorde fleet in October. As reported by News From Abroad, Sir Richard Branson initially offered GBP1 for each aircraft but recent reports suggest BA is more likely to put the fleet into museums and aircraft collections – but the flag-carrier might keep one in working order for air displays.
However, The Guardian reports, Virgin wants to use two aircraft already grounded to provide spare parts for the remaining five, and is still keen to operate the jet on flights from the UK to Dubai, Washington, New York and Barbados.
A spokesman reportedly said: “This is industrial vandalism and it is disgrace to the airline industry, an industry which we all love. There is no reason why the aircraft cannot still fly in some form for the nation.”
