Bad weather blamed as Celebrity ship crashes into pier
Damage caused to Ketchikan dock in Alaska has been calculated at up to £2 million after Celebrity Cruises’ ship Infinity crashed into a pier on arrival on Friday.
Port officials say repairs could take up to two months and the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment is investigating.
The 90,000-ton ship also took a hit with visible damage including a small hole above the water line in the accident, which Celebrity spokesman Owen Torres said was caused by ‘inclement weather’.
Damage to the ship has now been repaired and Infinity has been cleared to depart for Vancouver.
With one pier out of commission for the time being, some ships will be forced to anchor offshore said City of Ketchikan Port and Harbors director Steve Corporon.
"We’re going to have to have them anchor out and tender (passengers) in," he said.
No-one on board the ship was injured in the crash.
