Bali to halt new hotel construction
Indonesia plans to halt any new development of hotels in certain parts of the overcrowded south of Bali.
It wants to stop new construction of hotels, villas and beach clubs.
The tourism related construction moratorium could last for many years, according to minister Luhut Pandjaitan.
“We’ll see later (how long it will last.) It could be five years, it could be 10 years. It just depends on the evaluation,” Luhut said.
The construction halt would be focused on the South Bali areas of Badung, Tabanan and Denpasar and Gianyar, which includes the popular central Bali town of Ubud.
Luhut says there are about 200,000 foreign expats living in Bali.
Official data shows there are 541 registered hotels in Bali, although in reality there are many more operating.
Tourism has rebounded in Bali after the pandemic, but is putting a heavy strain on infrastructure and quality of life for certain areas.
