Bargain-basement Costas?
Hotels in Spain are reportedly offering discounts of nearly 50 per cent in an effort to stem the tide of tourists choosing to fly to other holiday destinations.
The Daily Mail reports that some three-and four-star hotels are “slashing” their prices to ensure their rooms are full for the peak season, with others offering free half-board or giving away extra nights at no cost.
The newspaper reports that the British package market to Spain is down some 20 per cent, with the number of French and German tourists visiting the country also down on last year.
The Madrid bombings, increasing numbers of British people owning second homes in Spain, and a failure to modernise resorts, are all being blamed for the slump.
Thomas Cook spokesman Sadie Nicholas is quoted as saying: “It is no secret that Spain is down this year. We have a lot of good deals around. Now, before the summer holidays kick in, is a good time to go.”
