Baring all to stop Pamplona bull run
Hundreds of campaigners have reportedly stripped down to their underwear to protest against one of the world’s most famous tourist spectacles, the running of the bulls at Pamplona.
Thousands upon thousands of visitors from across the world descend on the northern Spanish town each year to watch as bulls race through the narrow streets. But one little-publicised fact is that the bulls are all then taken to the bullring, where they face certain death.
According to a report on the Sydney Morning Herald website, the protesters came from across Europe, with the intention of ending the centuries-old tradition.
One is quoted as saying: “Slaves and gladiators were tradition too, but that doesn’t make it okay,” while others carried banners reading “Torture isn’t culture” and “Stop the bloody bull fight”.
But there were other reasons for attending the protest, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. Sixty-four year-old Pedro, a resident of Pamplona, reportedly said: “If that’s how people want to entertain themselves, that’s fine. We’re here to see the girls – simple as that.”
