Bridegroom falls to death in Portuguese resort
A bridegroom has fallen to his death on his honeymoon in Portugal as he and his wife returned to their hotel.
Brian Orton, 45, was negotiating the cliffpath in the dark when he lost his footing and fell up to 60ft, reports the Daily Mail.
An open-air escalator has been built into the cliff and it is uncertain whether Mr Orton slipped from the top of the path or from the escalator itself.
His wife, Catherine, 40, had been a few steps ahead and rushed to alert staff at the resort in Albufeira when she had no reply from her husband.
Mr Orton fell near the Pau da Bandeira bluff, a popular viewpoint overlooking Fisherman’s Beach on the east side of the resort.
A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed a British national had been killed in Albufeira. He added: ‘We offered consular assistance to the family.’
Officers of the Policia Judiciaria, the Portuguese criminal investigation police, were unavailable to comment.
