Broadway theaters to remain closed until June
New York’s Theaterland will stay dark through June 7.
Broadway theaters were shut down on March 12 with a closure initially for one month.
With the covid-19 crisis still affecting New York City worst of all, and much of the US advised to stay at home, extending the closure is no surprise.
People with tickets for shows up to June 7 are advised to contact the point of sale for a refund.
"All New York City Broadway shows have now been cancelled through Jun 7, 2020," said theater owners’ association the Broadway League.
"When this unexpected intermission comes to an end – and, make no mistake, it will come to an end – we’ll once again gather at lobby bars."
"Our top priority continues to be the health and well-being of Broadway theatergoers and the thousands of people who work in the theater industry every day," said Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League.
The reopening date is still uncertain
It is also the same date the Tony Awards was due to take place but that has already been shelved until sometime later in the year.
Some shows that were due to open on Broadway this spring have abandoned that now, including ‘Hangmen’ and ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’
New York is still the nation’s coronavirus hotspot with more than 140,000 confirmed cases.
