Cathay suspends Gatwick-Hong Kong service

Wednesday, 12 Feb, 2020 0

Cathay Pacific has suspended its service between London Gatwick and Hong Kong until March 28 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

It has also temporarily grounded its services to Rome, Washington DC, Newark, Male, Davao, Clark, Jeju and Taichung until March 28.

Routes to all cities in mainland China, excluding Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Xiamen, have also been suspended.

Prior to announcing the international route suspensions, the airline had asked its 27,000 staff to take turns in taking three weeks unpaid leave due to falling demand.

"In view of the Novel Coronavirus outbreak, and the subsequent drop in market demand, we have reduced around 90% of Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon flights into Mainland China. There will also be significant short-term reductions – approximately 30% of our capacity – across our network over the next two months.

"Destinations subject to temporary suspension until 28 March 2020 are: London Gatwick, Rome, Washington DC, Newark, Male, Davao, Clark, Jeju, Taichung, and all mainland China cities with the exception of Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Xiamen. Start dates for suspensions and frequency reductions are variable."
