Changeable weather and warmer temperatures threaten lower slopes

Sunday, 30 Mar, 2016 0

Changeable weather will continue to affect many resorts across the Alps, with a mixture of sun, cloud and rain showers expected over the coming days. Temperatures will see a noticeable rise, particularly across the northern Alps.

In Austria, around 5-10cm snow fell across many regions, with resorts across the Ski Welt region seeing the best of the recent falls. Conditions are best on the upper slopes currently, with pistes of the lower mountain softening up rapidly in the spring sunshine.

In France, Val Thorens has the best of the current conditions, with low temperatures ensuring that the 10cm of new snow that fell on Tuesday remains in excellent condition across the entire mountain while Tignes saw 15cm of new snow across the upper mountain on Tuesday. Low temperatures mean the new snow remain in excellent condition for much of the week ahead.

Switzerland is experiencing high temperatures likely to further deteriorate the slopes this weekend although the Verbier region, Nendaz had a fresh snowfall of 10cm, which provided some fresh conditions at the top.

Italy has also been affected by spring weather with skiers in the Dolomites encouraged to stick to pistes of the upper mountain. The Aosta Valley and Monterosa region have largely missed out on the freeze/thaw conditions affecting many other regions currently. Good top to bottom skiing is currently being reported in many resorts throughout the area.

The best conditions in Andorra can be found at Vallnord (80/140cm) which has 14/14 lifts running.

Good skiing remains on offer in Norway and Sweden with the odd snow shower still likely. Voss in Norway and Are in Sweden offer the best conditions.

Variable conditions are present in Germany with fresh snow at Garmisch Partenkirchen (165/355cm).  Elsewhere in Germany expect less favourable conditions, with spring-like conditions present in many resorts such as Berchtesgaden (0/50cm).

The pick of Bulgaria was Borovets  (80/90cm) which continues to offer some nice skiing following last week’s snow fall. Pamporovo (20/30cm) is in need of some more snow despite having 9/10 lifts running. Bansko (0/160cm) still has some good groomed slopes at the top, but the runs down to the town remain closed due to the lack of snow.

The US offers fantastic skiing across much of Utah after as much as 40cm of new snow fell overnight. Light snow is expected over the coming days, so expect conditions to only further improve in the near future.

Conditions in Canada are also good with many resorts in the region reporting upwards of 5cm of fresh snow yesterday. Fernie (339/339cm) was the pick of the resorts where all 10 of its lifts were running yesterday and powder conditions were apparent throughout the mountain.
