China re-authorizes group tours to Canada
Earlier this month, China has decided to resume group tour services for Chinese citizens traveling to Canada through travel agencies, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said earlier last week.
Canada Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand added in another statement that the resumption of Chinese group tourism to Canada was “an important step in the recalibrated bilateral relationship.”
The move came after Prime Minister Mark Carney met Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea on Friday, with Anand calling it a “turning point” in the relations between the two countries.
Spokesperson Mao Ning told a regular press briefing that this is the result of comprehensive consideration of the outbound travel demands of Chinese citizens and the tourism environment of relevant destinations.
The move is expected to further enhance people-to-people exchanges between China and Canada and foster mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, she said.
“We stand ready to work with the Canadian side to facilitate people-to-people exchanges and hope that Canada will meet China halfway to provide a safe and comfortable environment for Chinese tourists,” the spokesperson said.
Nationally, Chinese visitor numbers are down 51 per cent since 2019, when Canada recorded more than 500,000 Chinese visitors. In 2024, Chinese travelers reached 286,000 up by 43%. But these numbers are growing. From January to June 2025, Chinese travelers to Canada reached 134,000, up 7% compared to the same period of 2024.
