Coast Guard probes near collision on cruise ships
The U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska opened an investigation after a cruise ship broke its moorings and almost collided with another vessel.
It happened during a sudden thunderstorm in Juneau.
Amid strong winds, the mooring lines tethering Celebrity Edge snapped and it drifted toward the docked Carnival Luminosa.
The bridge managed to regain control and drop anchor in the harbor before a collision.
The Southeast Alaska based US Coast Guard is investigating.
“Our investigations division are running with a standard investigation, just like we would do with any similar such incident. It is just to investigate if there’s anything that could have gone better or not,” said Lt. Matt Naylor, public affairs officer for the Coast Guard of Southeast Alaska.
The US Coast Guard says it received videos from guests and residents. “We’ve gotten tons of submissions,” he added.
“Thankfully, nobody appeared to be injured. There didn’t appear to be any significant damage.”
The rare summer thunderstorm prompted a National Weather Service severe thunderstorm warning for Juneau.
