Could travel review site generate future liability claims?
TripAdvisor owner Expedia says there is no litigation yet but it warns about the potential liability for content users in reviews, blogs, and other social media.
Expedia “warns there is no guarantee that the company (TripAdvisor) will avoid future liability and potential expense for legal claims based on the content available on its websites.”
This warning comes with the notion that “it isn’t often that you get a lot of candor from Trip Advisor about the hazards of user-generated content,” says Tnooz, which reported the story and is self-described as a site for “talking travel tech.”
There was speculation among hoteliers last year about preparing a joint lawsuit against TripAdvisor or others but it has not yet materialized.
The potential liability issue arose in a financial filing involving the proposed spinoff of TripAdvisor into a public company.
In that filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Expedia says it is TripAdvisor’s largest customer.
Other risks for TripAdvisor include a reduction of traffic because of Google’s development of Google Places, as well as other entrees into the market, says Expedia.
