Council to appeal High Court decision over term-time holiday fine
Isle of Wight Council is to appeal against a decision by the High Court over a fine for a term-time holiday.
In the widely-publicised case, the High Court ruled last month that Jon Platt did not have to pay a £120 fine after he took his daughter to Florida for a week’s holiday.
The High Court ruled that his daughter attended school regularly so a fine was not valid.
Campaigners against the tighter holiday restrictions imposed since 2013 said it was a pivotal case in their fight, while councils said it would create confusion about the rules.
The Isle of Wight Council’s legal fees are being paid for by the Department for Education while Mr Platt managed to crowdfund £25,000 to cover his legal costs.
He has since set up a company to help parents who also believe they were wrongly fined.
Isle of Wight Council said it had decided to go ahead with an application to appeal against the court decision after receiving a formal request from the Department of Education and an offer to cover the costs.
