Cruise industry defends ‘value’
It’s generally thought cruise prises are on the rise but don’t tell that to Bob Dickinson, president and CEO of Carnival.
He argues cruising is actually less than half the price it was 25 years ago.
The current price for a Carnival Caribbean cruise from Miami is $599, he said. That’s the same price it was 25 years ago when, adjusted for inflation, the same cruise today would cost $1,373.
Said Mr Dickinson:
“And when comparing today’s ultra-modern ‘floating resorts’ to cruise ships of 25 years ago, your $599 buys so much more.”
Twenty five years ago, most ships were converted transatlantic ocean liners with smaller cabins and few amenities, Mr Dickinson said.
“There’s really no comparison between the seagoing vacations of today and yesterday. Everything has been upgraded dramatically,” he added.
Meanwhile, tickets prices for cruise vacations should soon reach levels set before the 2001 terrorist attacks, reported the Associated Press.
“The launching of far-bigger ships with new features like luxury spas and ice skating rinks mean consumers get more bang for their buck than on voyages 20 years ago, the news service said.
