Cruise ships skip ports to avoid Storm Floris
Cruise ships have been forced to skip ports and revise their itineraries as Storm Floris blows across northern Scotland and the North Sea.
Regal Princess, on a British Isles cruise, skipped calls at Invergordon and Stornoway this week.
“Storm Floris is approaching the north of Scotland bringing high winds and heavy seas. As a result, and as the safety of our guests and crew is our highest priority, we have made the necessary decision to cancel our calls,” it said in a letter to guests.
It is on a 12-night UK cruise.
The revised itinerary sees a Greenock call a day earlier than planned and an extra port call in Liverpool.
“While we may still experience some rough seas, this will enable us to proceed ahead of Storm Floris and shelter in the Firth of Clyde and the Irish Sea,” Princess Cruises added.
Additionally, Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambience has revised its seven-night Norwegian Fjords sailing.
Today’s call to Sandnes was cancelled for an early Bergen stop.
The scheduled call at Alesund on 7 August will be extended, while calls to Haugesund and Stavanger have been cancelled.
The Met Office issued warnings for parts of Scotland, the Orkney and Shetland Islands, while the west coast of Norway is under a similar advisory.
Wind gusts could nearly 80 mph in some Norwegian coastal areas.
