Delta to upgrade, expand inflight Wi-Fi
Delta Air Lines has announced an extensive program to upgrade its in-flight Wi-Fi coverage and broadband speed with access expanded to Latin America and Caribbean flights.
Wi-Fi provider Gogo will start updating Delta’s long-haul domestic aircraft which use air-to-ground technology with satellite-based technology starting in 2016.
Delta is also working with Gogo on next generation air-to-ground Wi-Fi service for short-haul routes for faster connection at broadband speeds.
More than 250 of Delta’s aircraft on long-haul routes will have the satellite-based 2Ku system installed for coverage when flying over water or outside existing air-to-ground service areas.
Delta says its entire international fleet will be equipped with Wi-Fi by mid-2016 and the 2Ku service will be offered on Airbus A330-900Neo and A350-900 aircraft as they enter service.
Free and paid streaming content will be offered for portable electronic devices through the newly upgraded Delta Studio, now available on flights to Latin America and the Caribbean.
