Tourist attack in Sri Lanka thought to be isolated incident

An attack which killed a British man on holiday in Sri Lanka is being treated as an isolated incident.

Sri Lankan tour operators are awaiting more information after the death of Red Cross worker Khuram Shaikh, 32, from Manchester on Christmas Day in the tourist resort of Tangalle.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the attack on Mr Shaikh, who had been based in Gaza with the Red Cross since September 2010.

The Experience Travel Group which specialises in Sri Lanka described the resort as an ‘idyllic spot’.

It said it has some of the nicest villas and high end beach hotels as well as a small section of backpacking.

A spokesman said: “Security isn’t normally an issue. At the moment all we can say is that this is an isolated incident until we hear otherwise.

“The peak weather season starts in January and December is very busy. We have a lot of clients there at the moment and have not heard of any problems.

“Everywhere there is full at the moment.”
