Disney cruise ship picks up migrants

A Disney cruise ship picked up 12 suspected migrants on its way to the Cayman Islands.

Disney Wonder was sailing from Miami when the group of Cuban migrants was spotted in a ‘rustic’ boat, according to the US Coast Guard.

They were brought onboard and taken to Grand Cayman, where they have been turned over to authorities.

Reports said US officials have noticed an increase in Cuban migrants trying to reach the States by sea, possibly fearing that warmer relations between the two countries will prevent the US from welcoming immigrants from Cuba.

Earlier this month officials in the Cayman Islands said more than 120 Cuban migrants had landed there since January.

In 2013, the same Disney cruise ship picked up a group of eight migrants stranded on a raft about 45 miles from Key West.
