Disneyland fined after workers sick with Legionnaires

Disneyland has been cited and issued fines for failing to maintain cooling equipment which allegedly caused Legionnaires Disease.

Three Disney workers contracted Legionnaires and two were hospitalized.

The California Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued fines totalling more than $35,000 earlier this year.

Legionella bacteria can grow in man-made water systems and pneumonia can be contracted when breathing in contaminated vapor.

Several people were struck down with Legionnaires last year in Orange County and one died.

Disney was accused of failing to clean and maintain the equipment and did not report the illness of two of the workers in a timely manner.

The company ‘strongly objects’ to the agency findings as the source of the outbreak ‘has never been scientifically determined.’

Disney has lodged an appeal.

After the Legionnaires outbreak was discovered Disneyland closed the cooling towers and decontaminated them.
