Domestic and beyond-US travel is booming for Canadians, tells Airbnb

Canada’s domestic travel boom showed no signs of slowing down according to a survey conducted by Airbnb. The collected data by home-stay company Airbnb showed that domestic bookings jumped by more than 10% 1 in the first half of the year compared to 2024. It confirms the momentum in domestic travel by Canadian holidaymakers.

Travelers in Canada are choosing to explore closer to home, spending their travel dollars locally and supporting Canadian hosts, small businesses, and communities in doing so.

This surge in domestic travel is happening nationwide. Nearly every province and territory—12 out of 132—saw growth this year, with smaller towns and rural communities attracting more visitors, driving the economic benefits of tourism beyond major hubs.

Provinces leading the surge in domestic travel

In the first half of 2025, bookings by Canadians in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan climbed by more than 20 percent year-over-year. It also underscored significant growth in both urban and rural communities.

The vast majority of bookings in Canada were already domestic, so to see a surge this big is especially significant. Canadians are continuing to explore their own country, and that’s delivering real economic benefits for hosts, small businesses, and communities nationwide. Domestic travel is becoming a lasting part of our identity,” analyzed Hannah Parish, Country Manager Canada.

From coastal towns to mountain escapes, Canadian travelers are spreading out and discovering new corners of the country, with destinations out west seeing a surge in domestic bookings. British Colombia remains at the top trending destinations with Langley, Ucluelet, West Kelowna and Whistler. Other trending destinations are Regina in Saskatchewan, Gatineau in Quebec, Canmore in Alberta and Blue Mountain in Ontario.

Canadians are expanding their horizons abroad

But Canadians are also showing more appetite for non-US international trips. There’s been a nearly double-digit increase in international bookings to destinations outside the US compared to the first half of 2024. Double-digit increase in bookings were recorded for Japan, Brazil, the Philippines, France, Thailand, and Mexico.

Top trending international destinations for Canadians in 2025 on Airbnb include Nakano, Sumida and Naniwa Ward in Japan; Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil; Los Cabos and Bahia de Banderas in Mexico; Casablanca in Morocco; Paris in France and Yuma in the Dominican Republic.
