Drink/drug tests for all BA staff
British Airways is reportedly ready to carry out alcohol and drug tests on more than 40,000 UK-based staff.
The Daily Telegraph today reports that that random tests will be carried out on any recruits until they have completed six months’ service, while all staff face the likelihood of being tested if there is any suspicion they are under the influence of drink or controlled drugs.
The newspaper reports that any staff members could be sacked if they are found to have taken drugs, or are above the normal drink-drive limit. If unions agree, the new rules will come into place from 1 August.
BA’s director of safety, security and risk management, Geoff Want, is quoted as saying: “Testing is common in many other safety-critical industries such as the rail, chemical and nuclear sectors. Testing reinforces our absolute commitment to safety, which is our number one priority.”
