FCO updates travel advice for Sri Lanka
Tourists are being told it’s safe to return to Kandy following violent outbreaks in the Sri Lankan city.
The UK Foreign Office updated its travel advice on Wednesday saying it was aware of some reports of tourists being caught up in movement restriction and of an ‘indefinite’ police curfew.
Updated advice says the curfew has been lifted but said if further curfews are imposed, visitors should comply with local security authorities.
It also told visitors to consult the Sri Lankan Tourism website for regular updates on the impact of tourism in the area.
The FCO said there are no reports that major tourist areas elsewhere in Sri Lanka have been affected and Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo is operating as normal.
"Trains to and from Kandy are understood to be operating normally, but there may be some disruption to local travel," it said.
"Certain social media sites and messaging platforms have been blocked or restricted nationwide."
An earlier recommendation by Sri Lanka Tourism for tourists not to travel into Kandy has been lifted.
Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency earlier this week due to violent clashes between the Buddhist and Muslim communities.
The Foreign Office continues to warn visitors to ‘exercise caution, avoid protests and rallies’.
