Fire breaks out on ferry between UK and Spain
The Britanny Ferries’ ship Pont-Aven is on its way to the port of Brest for checks after a fire broke out in the early hours of Monday morning.
The cruise-ferry was carrying 766 passengers and 142 crew from the UK to Spain when the alarm was raised at 4am local time.
The fire, detected in an engine room, was brought under control with no injuries, French maritime authorities reported.
Pont-Aven was travelling from Plymouth to Santander and was off the coast of northwest France at the time and a French navy helicopter carrying firefighters was dispatched.
"The fire was quickly brought under control and there were no injuries among the 766 passengers and 142 crew," the maritime authorities said.
Pont-Aven is the ferry company’s biggest vessel.
