First coronavirus death reported outside China
After more than 300 fatalities so far, the first coronavirus death has occurred outside China.
The Philippine Department of Health said a 44-year-old Chinese man died in a Manila hospital.
The man was from Wuhan and was admitted on January 25 after complaining of a fever, cough, and sore throat.
He then developed severe pneumonia.
He was the travel companion of a woman who was also diagnosed with the virus.
Referring to the man who died, health officials said: "he showed signs of improvement, however his condition deteriorated within his last 24 hours resulting in his demise."
The Philippines has now barred all travellers from or who have recently been in China.
The death toll has risen above 300 with more than 14,000 confirmed cases.
That is far more than the 2003 Sars epidemic although the death rate is much lower.
Meanwhile, Vietnam has recorded its seventh case of coronavirus, a Vietnamese-American man who spent only two hours at Wuhan Airport during a layover.
