Freedom from gadget addiction

Elite Island Resorts is encouraging guests to free themselves while on vacation from cell phones and laptops by creating a device-free beach at their various resorts.

Elite Island has a wide collection of resorts in some of the most sought-after destinations, including Antigua, Grenada, St. Lucia and Tortola.

The new policy, helping guests unplug from the gadgets that occupy so much of modern life, has been introduced at the following four beach resorts:  Galley Bay Resort & Spa, St. James’s Club & Villas and The Verandah Resort & Spa, all located in Antigua, and Palm Island, a private-island resort in the Grenadines.

"The move is the first for any Caribbean travel company and follows a successful trial launch at Palm Island, which was the world’s first beach to become device-free almost two years ago,” according to a press release.

“What we discovered at Palm Island is that our guests want to kick back and relax without being distracted and burdened by incoming messages, emails and phone calls,” said Elite Island Resorts President Steven Heydt.

“We will continue to provide Internet connectivity in different areas of our resorts, but we want guests to know they have the option to completely disconnect from the rest of the world and instead reconnect with themselves and their loved ones.”
