Good weather news: hurricane threat over
Tourism officials and others can sigh with relief at the good news: no more major hurricanes will form in the Atlantic Ocean this year.
Forecasters at Colorado State University say the greatest danger to the US from hurricanes is over this year.
That compares with last year when there was a record of 28 storms, 15 of which were hurricanes.
The Colorado scientists had previously predicted the Atlantic storm season would be one of the worst. Their new forecast predicted two more tropical storms before the close of the six-month season on 30 November.
The Colorado group is among leading forecasters.
By this time last year, the Atlantic had produced 18 named storms. Five of last year’s storms were major hurricanes, including Katrina, which devastated New Orleans and caused more than 1,800 deaths.
