Great Wall of China teams up with Hadrian’s Wall for tourism collaboration
An unique tourism collaboration has been signed between two of the world’s most famous walls.
The Great Wall of China has teamed up with the UK’s Hadrian’s Wall to explore ways to boost tourism and share expertise.
A formal Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Historic England and the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage.
"Representatives from the two world heritage sites will work together to examine the challenges and opportunities of managing large and complex archaeological remains and explore the potential tourism growth in both countries," said heritage minister John Glen.
"This collaboration is part of the UK – China People to People dialogue. It is a perfect example of the global significance of heritage and how it can be used to strengthen our international partnerships."
Both walls became World Heritage sites in 1987.
This is ‘the formal beginning of a formal relationship’, said Humphrey Welfare, chairman of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site Partnership Board, who has spoken at seminars in China about conservation and management of Hadrian’s Wall.
The MOU will see activities aimed at increasing public involvement and awareness of the two walls, which will include events in Newcastle and at the Great Wall during 2018.
