Gunman on the run after shooting two dead in Germany
A gunman is believed to be on the run after shooting dead two people in the east German town of Halle.
The Foreign Office has updated its advice for Germany, urging visitors to follow advice of local authorities. It said local police were publishing updates on their Twitter channel, although these are only in German.
The attacker live streamed his assault to the website Twitch, with footage showing him shooting a woman in the back outside a synagogue before driving to a Turkish kebab shop and shooting a man at point blank range. He also opened fire on vehicles in the street, before escaping in a VW Golf.
Officials at the Uniklinikums Halle hospital said it was treating two more people for gunshot injuries, including a victim undergoing surgery.
A hand grenade was also thrown in to a Jewish cemetery following the shootings, according to German news site Bild.
A separate shooting was later reported in the town of Landsberg, a 20-minute drive from Halle.
Mayor of Landsberg Anja Werner later said a car had been hijacked and driven onto a motorway that leads to Munich.
Security has been increased at Germany’s land borders and airports to try to prevent the man’s escape.
Eye-witnesses told local public broadcaster MDR that the suspect was wearing a military-style combat uniform and was armed with ‘multiple weapons’.
In his 35-minute video, which has since been removed from Twitch, the suspect describes himself as a Holocaust denyer.
