Haiti upswing in tourist arrivals continues
Haiti tourism is continuing its upward trend with an increase of 14.9% in tourist arrivals in the first quarter.
Newly released data from the Caribbean Tourism Organization shows a total of 114,501 visitors came between January and March this year, building on the success of 2013 which saw a 20.2% year-on-year increase.
Renewed efforts to make Haiti more welcoming for foreign visitors, led by tourism minister Stephanie Villedrouin are paying off and this week American Airlines announced plans for scheduled nonstop services from Miami to Cap-Haitien.
Over the last two years several major hotel brands have entered the market or are currently constructing new properties such as Best Western, Marriott, Occidental and Hilton Garden Inn.
Royal Caribbean Cruises is also looking at further growth in the country, holding discussions earlier this month with tourism officials about cruise port upgrades and expanding shore excursions from its base at Labadee private island.
