Hanoi expects tourism boost after bagging Formula 1 race
Formula 1 fans across Southeast Asia can look forward to a new pitstop in the region.
After the Malaysia GP ended recently, Southeast Asia will again have two races with Hanoi making its debut on the F1 race calendar.
The Hanoi F1 race will begin in 2020.
The city is constructing a new 5.5km track which features a unique hybrid circuit.
Half of it forms part of existing roads.
"The race track in Hanoi is unique in the world with half of it being on existing streets and the other half to be built. The length and turns of this track will bring a lot of excitement," said Nguyen Duc Chung, mayor of Hanoi.
Chung says it will be the most exciting racetrack in the world.
"Hosting Formula 1 races in Hanoi will open us many opportunities for business and tourist development."
F1 chairman Chase Carey has made Asia a priority for its expansion.
"The energy of this country is incredible. The city of Hanoi I think is increasingly one that’s capturing the world’s imagination. Asia is clearly very important overall to our future," Carey said.
"It’s really the driving engine of the world’s future, so as we look to grow this sport in Asia, we want to be in a country we really think it’s going to be the engine of growth," he added.
