Hawaii tells tourists to stay away

Sunday, 24 Aug, 2021 0

Hawaii Governor David Ige is asking tourists to stay away from the islands.

Ige says it is a ‘risky time’ to be traveling right now and hospital beds are filling up and healthcare faclities are overstretched in some places.

"I encourage everyone to restrict and curtail travel to Hawaii. It’s not a good time to travel to the islands."

Visitors will not get the ‘typical’ vacation experience given that restaurants are at 50% capacity and rental vehicles are in very short supply.

"We are seeing more Covid patients in our hospitals and the ICUs are filling up. We know that we need to take action now in order to reduce the spread," Ige said.

"If things do not change, our health care systems will be crippled," said Dr. Elizabeth Char, director of the Hawaii health department.

Hawaii has seen a big surge in the number of inections in ecent weeks.

Hawaii Tourism Authority also advised travelers to stay away.

"We are strongly advising visitors that now is not the right time to travel, and they should postpone their trips through the end of October," said HTA President and CEO John De Fries.
