Holiday bookings up in post World Cup fever
Holiday bookings are on the up as Telewest reports a 15% increase in Viewdata usage over the weekend.
Telewest said this notable rise followed England’s World Cup defeat on Friday, concluding that many consumers may have been delaying their summer holiday bookings to see if England made it through to the semi-finals of the championship.
Telewest said both the nation’s World Cup fever and this year’s Jubilee celebrations have had an impact on holiday booking patterns in June compared with this time last year. However since England’s defeat last Friday Telewest’s Viewdata figures indicate an improvement in holiday booking activity for both operators and agents alike.
Keith Webber, head of travel services, Telewest, said: “These two major events have definitely filled Britain with national pride and therefore consumers have been more willing to spend more time in the UK in June than in previous years. However, Viewdata figures, which are an excellent measure of consumer interest in holidays indicate a genuine shift post-World-Cup, as more consumers make their way to the travel agents now that they are not tied to the football schedule. As the Jubilee month comes to a close we expect this upward pattern to continue into July and August.”
