Hong Kong crippled by strike and protests
Hong Kong tourism leaders insist the protest-ravaged city is still open to travellers, despite the most chaotic day for demonstrations yet.
Clashes occurred between protesters and police and in some cases with other residents across seven districts as thousands went on strike. Attractions including Hong Kong Disneyland were affected as cast members joined the general strike.
Beaches were also closed as lifeguards stayed away.
Referring to it as ‘public events,’ Hong Kong Tourism Board posted an advisory warning of major disruption with transport paralysed and roads closed well into the night on Monday as clashes continued.
"Visitors are advised to check with their accommodation provider or check the Transport Department’s website for special traffic arrangements," it said.
Departing travellers were also advised to check with their airline before heading to the airport.
As many as 200 flights were cancelled, mostly operated by Cathay Pacific, which advised customers to postpone non-essential travel.
"We strongly advise customers not to go to the airport unless they have a confirmed booking. Please note that standby travel is not available at this moment," it said.
It has waived rebooking and rerouting charges.
It told customers travelling from Hong Kong International Airport that In-Town Check-in for all flights has been suspended and that congestion at the airport is highly likely.
"We suggest passengers arrive 3 to 4 hours prior to their flight’s scheduled departure time," it said.
More than 2,000 aviation workers went on strike in support of protests, while hundreds of black shirts chanted slogans in English to capture the attention of arriving passengers.
There have been delays on the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) after scuffles broke out between commuters and activists who were trying to stop trains leaving.
It was the ninth consecutive week of protests.
