Hurricane heads for Big Apple
New York is among six states that have declared a state of emergency ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Irene.
The first hurricane of the Atlantic season is now a category three storm and is expected to strengthen. Irene is now leaving the Bahamas and has already caused havoc in parts of the Caribbean.
In addition to New York, states of emergency have been declared in North Carolina, where it is expected to arrive tomorrow, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and New Jersey.
Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in parts of Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland and North Carolina.
Earlier this week, Irene struck the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos Islands and south-eastern parts of the Bahamas, leaving thousands without electricity and water supplies.
