Hurricane Sandy: All New York area airports effectively closed
As of Monday, October 29 at 7:00 a.m., all New York City-area airports are effectively closed, although technically they remain open for stranded passengers who are being given cots and food while they wait out the storm.
JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Airport have all stopped receiving flights as of Sunday evening. The website Flightaware.com says that over 7,000 U.S. flights to and from the Northeast corridor have been canceled. All major airlines flying in and out of the Eastern Seaboard are offering changes and cancellations for waived fees, although the end date on those waivers are almost all October 31.
Meteorologists are currently predicting that weather will not be normal in the region until mid-week, although dire predictions about power outages and flooding may affect back-to-normal conditions for flights and airports.
