Icelandic low cost carrier WOW coming to the US
Iceland-based low cost carrier WOW is aiming to make waves in the ultra-competitive transatlantic market.
The carrier said it will fly to Boston and Baltimore/Washington from Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik starting from March 2015.
First up is a year-round service to Boston five times a week from March 27 followed by seasonal thrice-weekly flights to BWI between June 4 and running through October 24.
Both routes will use 200-seat Airbus A321 extended range jets with an all-economy class configuration featuring seats with added legroom.
Its lead-in fares starting at under $250 round-trip including taxes is likely to raise eyebrows but the carrier operates a tried and trusted ‘ultra low cost’ model with added fees for checked bags, in-flight meals and seat assignments.
"We are proud to set the pace for low-cost transatlantic travel," said WOW founder Skúli Mogensen.
"From our first day of operations, my dream has been to connect North America and Europe through Iceland and I am confident we will expand to other cities and build a robust air service across the Atlantic."
The budget carrier began flying in 2011 and operates mainly between Reykjavik and short haul European destinations such as London and Copenhagen.
