Independent agents ‘outperforming multiples’
Independent agents have been outperforming their multiple rivals for some operators in the crucial January peak booking period.
Research by the 20 members of the Truly Independent Professional Travel Organisation found that on average bookings through independents were 13% higher in the first three weeks of January, over the same time last year. The value of bookings was also up – by around four per cent.
And on the question of whether independent agents were now competing effectively with on-line travel businesses, there was a near-unanimous ‘yes’ from TIPTO member companies.
TIPTO chairman, Colin Wilson (Bourne Leisure) said: “Our members had a gut feeling that 2007 had got off to a flier and the feedback we have from our members’ survey now confirms this.
“In many cases, our members are saying independents are out-performing the multiples but I think the key message that is coming through is that the New Year has got off to a cracking start for everyone.
“I am also delighted to learn that there is a consensus among TIPTO members that independent agents are holding off the internet threat.
“We have all long believed that independent agents would be able to adapt and use all their experience and tools at their disposal. This is happening and those agents that continue to give clients excellent service and a real choice will continue to thrive.”
One typical comment came from Jamie Webster, national account manager for Keycamp Holidays, who said: “Many independents have come to terms with the phenomenon of online business.
“Those that provide excellent customer service, with a strong personal touch – the internet doesn’t smile – and specialise in destinations or products, especially those that are tricky to book online, will continue to prosper.”
