Insurance firm shares tips for winter holiday drivers
An insurance company has issued advice for holidaymakers driving to ski resorts.
Insurance4carhire has published tips after analysis of its own claims data revealed almost £1 million was paid out to drivers in claims in the last ski season.
The most expensive of these claims were from customers driving in countries with heavy annual snowfall.
The most expensive was Austria, where the average claim was £610, followed by Switzerland (£439), Germany (£339), Italy (£267) and France (£201).
The insurance firm is urging holiday goers to familiarise themselves with winter driving conditions before they drive.
"It is particularly vital that you prepare your car well ahead of time for driving in more challenging conditions," said Tim Thornhill from I4CH.
"Snow chains can be a legal requirement in some areas of the Alps. For those hiring a vehicle, we recommend taking out excess cover to avoid being stung by additional costs for any incidents that may occur during your trip. Thorough planning and a knowledge of the precautions to take is key to minimising the risk of an accident happening."
Insurance4carhire’s tips include:
– Order snow chains in advance – and know how to use them. Don’t forget to check that they are in working order when you pick up the car.
– Make sure your car has winter tyres – this is particularly important if you’re driving in a country where they’re a legal requirement.
– Be prepared for a breakdown – a torch, blankets, water and a fully charged mobile phone are essentials.
– Research your route in advance – plan short breaks at service stations, don’t be caught out by unexpected road closures and remember that it tends to get dark earlier in winter.
– If it’s snowing, drive in a high gear – this will help reduce the chances of your wheels spinning.
