Island opens underwater post office
Vanuatu claims a world first for submarine post pod
The world’s first underwater post office has opened for business just off the coast of the South Pacific island of Vanuatu.
Tourists to the island paradise will be able to scuba dive three metres down to have special waterproof postcards embossed with a waterproof stamp, according to online news provider Ananova. The office, staffed by four dive-accredited postal shift workers, was created by Vanuatu Post to celebrate the 83-island archipelago’s status as a marine paradise.
Popular with Australian tourists, the island lies around 1,000 miles off the Queensland coast, across the Coral Sea. A world away from Postman Pat, the fibreglass postal pod is also visited by shoals of curious multicoloured fish, swimming among coral beds in a marine sanctuary off Hideaway Island on the outskirts of Port Vila, the island’s capital.
The offbeat idea was apparently devised to draw attention to the diversity of Vanuatu’s underwater world and easily accessible dive sites.
