Jamaica breaks visitor records for 2006
A record 3 million tourists visited Jamaica in 2006, or more than 15% from a year earlier.
The tourism ministry in a year-end report said revenues rose 24% to $2.1 billion.
Projected growth this year: 15%. That could be spurred in part by the Cricket World Cup. Jamaica is one of eight Caribbean countries scheduled to host the event between March 5 and April 28.
Jamaica saw 3 million visitors marked the first time arrivals passed the 3 million mark, officials said.
Tourism is Jamaica’s second best foreign exchange earner behind remittances, which reached $2.5 billion last year, officials said.
