Jet Airways buys rival for £284 million

Indian carrier Jet Airways is to buy rival carrier Air Sahara in a deal worth £284 million.

The takeover, which is subject to regulatory approval, will be the largest in India’s aviation history and give the merged operation a 45% share of the domestic market.

Jet Airways has been expanding rapidly since launching its inaugural international flight from London to Mumbai last May.

Air Sahara meanwhile marked its London debut on January 6 with a four times weekly flight to Delhi.

The expansion for both carriers followed an agreement by the UK and Indian Governments to move towards an open skies policy.
